Across the Land
Across the Land is an ongoing investigation of the landscape in rural Texas and beyond. It is a project focused on the land use along US Highway 90 A, primarily from Houston to Hallettsville, and then on across Interstate 10 through to Louisiana. It is a snapshot of industrial agriculture, oil and gas developments, farms, ranches and the open road. Crops are planted, grow and are harvested. Cattle are born, raised, fattened and taken to market. Solar power plants are installed. Oil wells are drilled and produced or capped and abandoned. Sand is mined. Wildlife abounds. In this wide open space there is a dizzying array of economic activity lying in plain sight, if you know how to look for it. Across the Land are double exposures shot from the passenger seat of a moving vehicle on many journeys between Houston and Hallettsville and beyond in 2022. There was no planning, turning around for reshoots or any stopping regarding the images. They appear as they would to anyone riding along the highway, watching as the landscape sweeps by with the miles.
